The Iron Triangle Cup is a 24 soccer team tournament played in the Willets Point neighborhood of Queens, New York, an industrial piece of land consisting of junkyards and auto shops. The teams are fielded by players from the local auto shop work force.
Matches are played at Mad Max Stadium, a cleared out junkyard consisting of a concrete pitch with boundaries demarcated by junk and trash with goals made from used tires and metal poles. Spectators sit in old seats ripped out of cars.
Organized by Artefacting as part of the Willets Point Festival in partnership with the Queens Museum of Arts, the social arts group uses the tournament to celebrate the industrial history of the neighborhood. Located just east of Citi Field, the Iron Triangle is home to junkyards, auto shops and mechanics but is under threat to be bulldozed to make way for residential and retail development by New York City.
